The "Euroscola" contest

The European Parliament information office in Romania has organized since the summer of 2010 until October the same year, the annual contest of Euroscola. This is a national competition dedicated to highschool pupils, age from 16 to 18 years throughout the country.

This year’s theme for the contest was the identification of a patrimony object in Romania, related to a personality in this country in relation with personalities from other European countries. The choosing of the personality was made by the participant students. The first 12 highschools on national scale were invited to participate to the Euroscola events held in Strasbourg during the year 2011.

The European Parliament has created the Euroscola program in order to inform young people about the process of European integration and to promote the participation to the construction of the European Union.
The goal of the program is to bring together highschool students from 27 member states, giving them the opportunity to find out how the European Parliment works, and also to get to know each other, to learn about the way of life, the visions and the expectations of young people from other member states.

The project

Our project wishes to be a point of support in the education of students and of the European community. Bearing in mind that for the personality we chose, there must exist heritage objects or objectives in the proximity of our zone, we could not have made a better choice than the great sculptor Constantin Brancusi.

Our students have dedicated a lot of time and actions to this competition, from which we recall: visiting the Memorial House of the artist in the village of Hobita in our district, Gorj, visits to other institutions that bring a tribute to the sculptor’s work (museums, educational establishments), interviews, survays, informative actions. We have also had in mind the awareness of our historical and cultural identity, and the acquisition of a clear image over the past and a pragmatically view over the future, aspects which constitute the primordial elements in the structure of our project, through the highlighting of the customs, traditions and national heritage.

The essay

Did Brancusi become what he is thanks to the European influences and the discovery of exotic arts? Or on the contrary, is his creation strictly representative of the Romanian folklore, even though he lived half a century in the center of the modern artistic innovations and revolutions?

Following the trails left by this admirable artist through his masterpieces and the hundreds of documents that previous generations have left us, we will realize that only in an European environment found at the door of evolution could he rise to such high altitudes where only Shakespeare and Beethoven are.
This essay is a trial to reveal Bracusi’s imagine by beautiful word representations of his great works and life.

It is said that the sculptor’s soul perfectly matched the material’s soul, outlining a petal of the marvel’s corolla of the world.Starting from an ancient Romanian place and evolving in a modern European space , the great sculptor Constantin Brancusi stepped into eternity, leaving the world a cultural and artistic heritage of inestimable value, whose inspirational aura will never quench.

The project’s objective

Our project’s objective was “The Monumental Assembly” from Targu-Jiu and the Memorial House “Constantin Brancusi” from Hobita.

I) A small village, in the heart of Gorj, a village in which the main activity was agriculture, in which the traditional customs had a major role, a village whose name would be significant because of one man: Hobita-Gorj-Romania, is the birthplace of the great sculptor Constantin Brancusi. The Memorial House "Constantin Brancusi" had been built after the original model, representing a precise reconstitution of the familial habit in which Brancusi – the child- had grown. The native places had a significant role in his becoming as an artist, assuming some popular motives that are found in the romanian village.

II) “The Monumental Assembly from Targu-Jiu” is a tribute to the fallen heroes of World War I, carrying with it the most obvious signs of artistic and philosophical spirit of the great artist.

1. "The Table of Silence" or "The National Apostles Table", is composed of 12 seats (representing the 12 apostles, Jesus being in the middle) and like Radu Boureanu said,it is "an invitation to a magical shadow council of ancestors." Petre Pandrea considers the Table of Silence as "a marriage , family, love and fertility hymn, as it happened on our lands since memorable times.

2. "The Gate of The Kiss" or "The National Unification Monument" expresses eternity of love ,the kiss representing unity. The kiss became a symbol of universal art and human spirituality chosen for the full union and communion among others. Brancusi's stone Gate is created to describe new paths to the heart of the earth and especially to Paradise.

3. “The Endless Column” or "The Column of Gratefulness", considered by Sidney Geist "the peak of modern art", is a true "spiritual testament" of the artist, an axis-mundi, as if designed to support the eternal heavens, is the symbol of aspiration towards the infinite - and feeling so often encountered and characteristic for the Romanian spirituality called in Romanian „dor”. The Endless Column has a weaker national rider, is less romanian than the other works made by Brancusi. It is the universal himself in his nudity.

4. “The Alley of Chairs” is in fact the central alley of the park that links The Table of Silence and The Gate of the Kiss. This represented the domain of those who participated without being involved, the cautious people, waiting for the final; they represent the order imposed by the circumstances. The chairs have a special meaning which gives them a sacred allure of hourglass, of clock that measures the path ,the time and the action.

5. “Holy Apostles Church” fits very well in the Assembly; it is the religious component of it.

Grinding his works to the philosophical substrate, Constantin Brancusi, this genius of the sculpture, considers that his work synthesize the essence of things, hidden in the world’s shadow. For him, sculpture represented not only a way to shape the material through creations, but also a way to touch the absolute. By proving the reducibility of the Assembly from Targu-Jiu to a folkloric substrate, we only wanted to make visible the so called “ Keystone” in the assimilation of Brancusi’s work, through the nowadays perspective.

The 1st activity

Our first activity took place in our school's amphitheatre in august 2010 and its goal was to start the project, to form the team and to share our responsabilities.
This activity was adressed to all of our students who were wishful to promote the image of our great sculptor Constantin Brancusi. There were different ways of evaluation like free speeches, deliberations or observations.
Following-up the first activity the 24 students were selected. They, together with their coordinating teachers will have as their goal: the objective reconstitution of the man, the artist, the sculptor Constantin Brancusi.

The 2nd activity

Our second activity took place in august 2010 and meant a thematic trip to Hobita, Brancusi's birth place, a village in Gorj, to the Primary School in Bradiceni where he was a pupil during his 3rd and 4th grade and we also went to the Monumental Assembly from Targu-Jiu which is unique in the world. With the ocassion of this trip the participants had the opportunity to make connections and became closer to each other and they had also the chance to strenghten the teacher-pupil relationship. We visited the Memorial House of Constantin Brancusi and the school were he was a student in order to find Brancusi's spirit and we also took some interviews. The second activity ended with one last stop in Targu-Jiu where we visited the sculptures from the Central Park.

The 3rd activity

The third activity took place in the Central Park of Motru, in September 2010. The purpose of this activity was to realize panels with the opinions of the people about Brancusi and with messages for Europe and for other people. We put three mobile panels in different places of our town and we invited the citizens to note a message, to express freely their ideas about the great sculptor.
By this activity we tried to rediscover the pride of being Romanians, to underline the preoccupations of the young students and to offer an example of how free time can be spent.

The 4th activity

The fourth activity took place in October 2010 at our College library and at the Computer Laboratory. The purpose was to realize a photo album and to inform students regarding certified works about Brancusi. Then, we consulted the virtual library and the museums which are Brancusi’s great works homes, to finalize our photo album. Through these actions we developed our team spirit and our knowledge.

The 5th activity

Intercultural dialog at Targu-Jiu –“The whisper of tradition"

The activity is related to the participation to an international cultural event ‘’The whisper of tradition’’, organized by the Art Museum and the History Museum from Targu-Jiu (Gorj) in the memory of the great sculptor Constantin Brancusi. During the 3 days between 9th – 11th October a trip was organized between the two towns Motru and Targu-Jiu .
Everything began with a painting exhibition which was initiated by Paul Gherasim. The second event of this activity was the participation at the sculpture exhibition from the History Museum and we also had the chance to witness the ikebana demonstration made by the artist Akiko kimura.
Afterwards the participants started a pilgrimage which began with the table of Silence all the way through the Endless Column. There, a chorus formed by artists from Oltenia, brought a tribute to Constantin Brancusi by some songs which made our souls tremble of emotion.

The 6th activity

The sixth activity was an interview with the rector of the "Constantin Brancusi" University from Targu-Jiu, Adrian Gorun. The activity took place in October 2010. This activity's goal was to discover the "birth history" of this spiritual place which is named after the great Romanian artist. We tried to demonstrate that Oltenia did everything it could on the spiritual sense to bring a tribute to Constantin Brancusi. Through this activity we got used to the atmosphere of an interview and we learnt new things about the great artist.

The 7th activity

The seventh activity was the last one for our team and had the purpose to finalize our project and also to underline the importance of this cultural project. Bringing to an end all the documents, realizing the scientific essay “Sense and Essence” the journal with people’s impressions, the photo album, the graphic album, the collages, and also realizing a CD with short movies of all our activities, meant that our project was ready to go further.
By this activity we wanted to make people aware of the national feeling that Brancusi put into his work and to show the desire of some teenagers to promote the image of the artist in Europe.
